Summer and your dosha

silverbay2

One of the things I liked most about learning Ayurveda and continues to resonate as I practice and study is that the belief is in greater self-discovery.  The more we know about ourselves, our bodies, our tendencies and our strengths the better we’ll be at being and staying our healthiest.

I had the pleasure of sharing Ayurveda this past weekend at a yoga and wellness retreat in upstate New York, this is the  backdrop to where the retreat was held.  I spoke on Summer and your dosha giving participants a peek into what the hot summer months may mean to them individually.  We began by identifying what their individual dosha was, discussed aspects of each dosha, how the qualities of the summer months can affect them individually and what they can do relax and enjoy the summer.

Here is some of what I shared.

5 tips to staying cool both physically and mentally this summer;

  1. Drink more water than you usually do.  Add a slice of cucumber or sprig of mint for extra cooling.
  2. Workout in the morning when it is cooler outside.
  3. Eat lots of fresh juicy fruit
  4. Increase the greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, sweet fruit, beans and grains and decrease the alcohol, spicy food and fried or salty foods.
  5. Use coconut oil as a moisturizer, it is naturally cooling.

 5 of my favorite Pitta season items for a pitta girl;

1. Mint tea, cooling and good for digestion. My favorite is from a local loose tea shop but this one is a close second, would make a good iced tea as well.

4. Rosewater or rose oil, refreshing and uplifting.

2. Organic Coconut oil, moisturizing and cooling.

3. Ghee.  Strengthening, nourishing and cooling all in one.

Aloevera juice. Good for overall digestion and balancing.

5. Aloevera juice. Good for overall digestion and balancing.
